October 6, 1969, marked the birth of Ebele Okoye in Onitsha, Nigeria, an individual who eventually became the first female animator in her home country. Now based in Berlin, she occupies a multifaceted career spanning painting, film production, and multimedia direction. Formative Years and Nigerian Media
Between 1985 and 1989, Okoye attended the Institute of Management and Technology in Enugu, where she earned a Higher National Diploma in Graphic Design and Illustration. Her early professional life included roles as a copywriter, branding specialist, and cartoonist for various Nigerian publications, notably the Classique magazine. During this time, she established herself within the Nigerian arts community before her relocation to Germany in 2000.

Upon arriving in Germany, Okoye participated in a guest program for African Studies at the University of Cologne. She later studied Communication Design at the University of Applied Sciences in Düsseldorf while undertaking a traineeship with the West German Broadcasting Corporation. She completed her formal training in traditional 2D cartoon animation at the Internationale Filmschule Köln in 2004, subsequently transitioning into independent production.
Production Studios and Digital Initiatives
Okoye founded Shrinkfish Animation Studios in Abuja in 2009, utilizing a remote-work model that preceded widespread industry adoption. This initiative led to the creation of Jolly Squid Ltd, which saw increased growth during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2013, she launched the Shrinkfish Media Lab, the first animation course of its kind in Nigeria, and later introduced the 2021 platform Motion to the Sound, which supports freelance minority animators.
Recognition and Artistic Scope
Her animated film The Legacy of Rubies received the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Animation in 2015. Beyond traditional animation, she explores virtual reality art using Oculus Quill and founded the EdTech startup Spunky Toonz in 2022 to develop audio-visual content for young children. Her collaborations span international partners, including Universal Music Group, Nickelodeon, and the Robert Bosch Foundation.
