Eberhard Freitag

German mathematician

The degree 12 Siegel cusp form was proven to exist by Eberhard Freitag in 1998, working alongside Rainer Weissauer and Richard Borcherds. Utilizing theta series linked to the 24 Niemeier lattices of dimension 24, this contribution remains a benchmark in modular form theory, illustrating his focus on the intersection of algebraic geometry and complex analysis.

Early Education and Research

Born on 19 May 1942 in Mühlacker, Germany, Eberhard Freitag commenced his university studies in 1961 at Heidelberg University, where he pursued mathematics, physics, and astronomy. He completed his Diplom in 1964 and earned his doctorate in 1966 under the supervision of Hans Maaß and Albrecht Dold.

Academic Career Trajectory

Freitag began his career as a research assistant at the Mathematischen Institut in Heidelberg in 1964. By 1969, he had completed his habilitation, subsequently serving as a Privatdozent and scientific advisor. After a visiting professorship at Johann-Wolfgang-Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main from 1970 to 1971, he transitioned to the University of Mainz in 1973 as a professor ordinarius. He returned to Heidelberg University in 1977 to hold a chair, eventually serving as the dean of the Faculty of Mathematics between 1991 and 1993.

Mathematical Contributions

Freitag specializes in complex analysis and the theory of modular forms, frequently applying methods from algebraic geometry to his investigations. His research output includes several monographs published in the Springer-Verlag series Grundlehren der mathematischen Wissenschaften. Notable publications include his 1983 work on Siegel modular functions, his 1990 text on Hilbert modular forms, and his collaborations on etale cohomology and function theory. Beyond his theoretical focus on modular manifolds and automorphic forms, he established that the Siegel modular variety Ag is of general type for g equals 8.
