Born in Pune in 1925, Ebrahim Alkazi emerged as a central figure in Indian theatre and visual arts throughout the twentieth century. His career bridged the transition from the British Raj to the independent Dominion of India, during which he applied rigorous disciplinary standards to actor training and production design, fundamentally altering the trajectory of modern performance and creative curation in New Delhi.
Early Development and Training
Following studies at St. Vincent's High School in Pune and St. Xavier's College in Mumbai, Alkazi joined the Theatre Group led by Sultan Padamsee. In 1947, he traveled to London to attend the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Despite receiving professional offers from the British Broadcasting Corporation and the English Drama League, he returned to India. He managed the Theatre Group from 1950 to 1954 and later co-founded the Theatre Unit with his wife, Roshen Alkazi, and Nissim Ezekiel.

In 1962, Alkazi assumed the directorship of the National School of Drama in New Delhi, a position he held until 1977. He implemented a comprehensive curriculum that integrated stagecraft with actor training. He established the NSD Repertory Company in 1964, utilizing Delhi's historical monuments as staging grounds for works such as Tughlaq and Andha Yug. His methodologies influenced a generation of practitioners who later entered film and television.
Visual Arts and Curatorial Work
Beyond his theatrical endeavors, Alkazi maintained a lifelong engagement with the visual arts. He was associated with the Bombay Progressive Artists' Group, which included painters like M. F. Husain and F. N. Souza. Between 1952 and 1957, he curated the multi-part exhibition series titled This is Modern Art at the Jehangir Art Gallery. Later, he and his wife founded the Art Heritage Gallery in Delhi to house their extensive collection.
