The medical career of Eber Landau spanned multiple European institutions, focusing on the intricate structures of the brain and the techniques required to observe them. Born in 1878 in Rēzekne, he developed a dual background in anatomy and histology, eventually applying his research to neurological fields while maintaining citizenship in both Latvia and Switzerland throughout his lifetime.
Early Academic Development
Landau completed his medical studies at the University of Tartu in 1902. Following his graduation, he refined his anatomical and histological skills through specialized research in Munich in 1903 and St. Petersburg, where he worked as an assistant to Peter Lesgaft. Between 1906 and 1912, he served as a prosector-assistant at the anatomical institute in Dorpat under August Rauber, building a foundation for his later academic career.

In 1913, Landau accepted an associate professor position at the University of Bern. He subsequently relocated to Paris to conduct neurological investigations under Joseph Jules Dejerine. He returned to Bern in 1918 to work at the institute of anatomy before moving to Kaunas in 1923. There, he founded and directed the department of histology and embryology at Vytautas Magnus University until 1932.
Contributions to Neuroanatomy
Landau spent the latter portion of his career at the University of Lausanne, investigating brain anatomy and neurohistology. His published works reflect this specialization, beginning with his 1907 dissertation on the suprarenal glands. Later volumes included his 1914 study on the visual cortex, a 1923 examination of the cerebrum, and his 1938 analysis of the claustrum parvum. His final major work, focusing on nerve impulse channels, appeared in 1948.
