Eartha Kitt launched her professional trajectory in 1942, eventually establishing a career as a versatile actor, singer, and dancer. Rising from modest origins in North, South Carolina, she utilized her training at the Lycée Français de Los Angeles and the High School of Performing Arts to anchor a multifaceted presence in international entertainment for over six decades.

Early Career and Katherine Dunham Company

Kitt began her formal career in 1943 as a member of the Katherine Dunham Company, where she remained until 1948. Her proficiency in multiple languages allowed her to cultivate a distinct cabaret style. This foundational period provided the discipline and technical skills she later applied to her diverse performances in film, television, and on the Broadway stage.

Transition to Television and Music

The year 1953 marked a pivotal point for her recording career with the release of the novelty song "Santa Baby" and the track "C'est si bon." She gained further public recognition in 1967 when she joined the television series Batman as Catwoman, replacing Julie Newmar. Her work in this era spanned various media, solidifying her status as a notable performer in the United States.

Public Advocacy and Career Resilience

In 1968, Kitt experienced a significant professional disruption following a White House luncheon where she voiced opposition to the Vietnam War in the presence of Lady Bird Johnson. Despite the ensuing fallout, she successfully returned to the stage in the 1978 production of Timbuktu!. This performance earned her the first of two Tony Award nominations, with a second nomination following in 2000 for The Wild Party.

Voice Acting and Later Honors

During the final decade of her life, Kitt gained a new audience through voice acting in animated productions. She provided the voice for Yzma in The Emperor's New Groove franchise, a role that contributed to her winning an Annie Award in 2000. She remained an active artist until her death in Weston in 2008.
