Early Career and Railways
Sreedharan began his professional path as a lecturer at the Government Polytechnic in Kozhikode after an apprenticeship at the Bombay Port Trust. In 1953, he passed the Indian Engineering Services Exam and joined the Indian Railway Service of Engineers. His early work focused on Southern Railway operations, eventually leading to his role in the planning and design of the Calcutta Metro beginning in 1970.

Tasked with revitalizing the struggling Cochin Shipyard in 1979, Sreedharan oversaw the successful launch of the vessel MV Padmini in 1981. Following this, he was appointed Chairman and Managing Director of the Konkan Railway in 1990. Under his guidance, the 760-kilometer project was completed in seven years, featuring 93 tunnels and 150 bridges, marking a significant advancement in Indian rail construction.
Delhi Metro Leadership
Serving as the managing director of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation from 1995 until 2012, Sreedharan became synonymous with rapid infrastructure expansion. By mid-1997, he ensured that scheduled sections were completed on time and within budget. He later acted as an advisor for the Dhaka Metro and the Kochi Metro, maintaining a reputation for insulating technical operations from political interference.
