Earvin N'Gapeth

Earvin N'Gapeth began his professional career in the 2008-09 season with Tours VB, marking the start of a trajectory that culminated in back-to-back Olympic gold medals in 2020 and 2024. Born in Saint-Raphaël, France, in 1991, he transitioned from a youth football academy to elite volleyball, establishing himself as a significant figure in the international sport.

Early Athletic Development

Before committing to volleyball, N'Gapeth spent his formative years in the commune of Fréjus, where he trained as a centre-forward in a football academy. He played alongside Layvin Kurzawa during this period. At age 11, the family moved to Poitiers. The local focus on volleyball encouraged N'Gapeth to abandon his football aspirations and focus on the court. By age 17, he signed his first professional contract.

Club Competitions and Transitions

N'Gapeth established his reputation at Tours VB, where he secured the French league title in 2009-10. His career subsequently spanned several leagues across Europe and Asia. Following his stint in France, he played for Piemonte Volley in Italy, before moving to the Russian Super League with Kuzbass Kemerovo and later Zenit Kazan. His tenure at Modena Volley included multiple Italian Cup and SuperCup titles. In recent years, he has represented clubs including Paykan Tehran in Iran, Halkbank in Turkey, and Jakarta Bhayangkara Presisi in Indonesia.

National Team and Individual Recognition

N'Gapeth's tenure with the French national team has been marked by high-level performance and occasional friction. He was expelled during the 2010 World Championship for insulting coach Philippe Blain, but rejoined the squad for the 2011 European Championship. He proved instrumental in the 2015 European Championship victory and earned MVP honors in the 2015 World League. Beyond his Olympic success, he secured multiple World League and Nations League gold medals, consistently recognized as one of the sport's most effective outside spikers.

Legal and Disciplinary Matters

His career includes several public legal incidents. In 2014, he received a three-month suspended sentence regarding a 2013 nightclub altercation in Montpellier. A 2015 incident at Paris Montparnasse station involving a train conductor resulted in a conviction that was overturned by the Court of Appeal of Paris in 2018. Additionally, in 2015, he was involved in a hit-and-run accident in Modena, Italy, which resulted in injuries to three pedestrians, prompting him to surrender to authorities.
