Education and Early Experience
Born in 1956 in Hamburg, Gatermann was raised by her architect father. She pursued professional training at TU Braunschweig and RWTH Aachen University. During her time at RWTH Aachen, she studied under Pritzker prize-winner Gottfried Böhm. She gained early project management experience by leading the Züblin House development in Stuttgart while still a student, later spending five years as a project leader for Böhm following her graduation.

In 1984, she partnered with Elmar Schossig, whom she eventually married, to establish the architecture firm Gatermann + Schossig in Cologne. The practice grew from modest initial assignments to managing roughly 50 implemented projects by 2009. Following the death of Schossig that year, Gatermann continued to lead the firm independently. Their collective work earned recognition in 2006, when the firm received the Pilkington glass company Synthesis prize for their architectural innovation.
Academic and Professional Contributions
Beyond her private practice, Gatermann served in academia, accepting a chair at the Technical University of Darmstadt in 2002. She held this teaching position until 2007, during which time she curated the Hall of Fame museum for women, including a traveling exhibition by photographer Bettina Flitner. She ultimately prioritized her design firm in Cologne, overseeing diverse commissions such as the renovation of the 13th-century Bayenturm and the design of an exhibition space for the Roman Museum in the Archaeological Park at Xanten.
