Doug Ellis

English football businessman (1924–2018)

A pioneer of the package holiday industry, Doug Ellis amassed a fortune by creating Sunflight, an enterprise that introduced affordable international travel to the British public. Beyond his commercial ventures, he became a central, often controversial, figure in English football through his extensive tenures as chairman and major shareholder of Aston Villa.

Early Career and Travel Ventures

Born in Hooton, Cheshire, in 1924, Ellis lost his father at the age of three. His mother supported the family, enabling him to attend school in Chester. During World War II, his service with the Fleet Air Arm in Ceylon introduced him to international travel. This experience convinced him there was a significant market for low-cost foreign vacations, leading to the creation of Sunflight, which propelled him to millionaire status before he turned 40.

Involvement in English Football

Ellis held two distinct periods of chairmanship at Aston Villa, first from 1968 to 1975 and later from 1982 to 2006. His leadership style, which saw the club employ 13 different managers, earned him the nickname 'Deadly Doug' from pundit Jimmy Greaves. In 1997, he oversaw the club's flotation on the stock market at a valuation of £126m. He also held board positions at Wolverhampton Wanderers, Birmingham City, and Derby County, and served on the board of the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association.

Final Years and Charitable Work

Following the 2006 sale of Aston Villa to Randy Lerner for £62.6 million, Ellis transitioned to the role of President Emeritus. In his later years, he focused on philanthropy, donating £416,000 to the University of Birmingham for a learning hub and contributing to the redevelopment of the Sir Doug Ellis Woodcock Sports Centre at Aston University. He was appointed an OBE in 2005 and received a knighthood in 2012 for his charitable contributions.
