Early Development and Education

Born in 1956 in Arthur, North Dakota, Burgum is the son of Katherine and Joseph Boyd Burgum. He graduated from North Dakota State University in 1978 before earning an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 1980. His early business experience included working as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company in Chicago.

Software Ventures and Corporate Leadership

In 1983, Burgum mortgaged farmland to provide seed capital for Great Plains Software in Fargo. He became president in 1984, taking the company public in 1997. Following its acquisition by Microsoft for $1.1 billion in 2001, he served as senior vice president of Microsoft Business Solutions until 2007. He also maintained roles at Atlassian and SuccessFactors.

Political Career and Public Service

Burgum served as the 33rd governor of North Dakota from 2016 to 2024, winning elections in 2016 and 2020. After an unsuccessful campaign for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, he served as an advisor to the Trump campaign. Confirmed by the U.S. Senate in a 79–18 vote, he was sworn in as Secretary of the Interior on February 1, 2025.

Interior Department Policy

As Secretary of the Interior, Burgum implemented policies focusing on expanding drilling on federal lands and increasing metals extraction from wildlife refuges. His tenure involved promoting coal-fired power while overseeing a crackdown on wind energy development, notably announcing a $2.6 billion payment to energy companies in 2026 to terminate existing wind farm plans.
