Dmitrii Sintsov

Dmitrii Sintsov held the chairperson position at the National University of Kharkiv for four decades, steering the institution’s mathematical output through significant shifts in the Soviet landscape. His career spanned from his initial education in the late 19th century until his passing in 1946, establishing a lasting presence within the Kharkiv mathematical community.

Academic Formation

Born in 1867 in Kirov, Sintsov pursued his formal higher education at Kazan Imperial University between 1887 and 1890. This period of study served as the foundation for his subsequent career, during which he focused his expertise on mathematics, specifically contributing to the study of logic and foundations. His academic trajectory led him to Kharkiv, where he became a fixture of the regional scientific faculty.

Institutional Leadership

In 1903, Sintsov began his long association with the National University of Kharkiv. Three years later, he assumed the role of chairperson, a position he retained until his death in 1946. Beyond his administrative duties at the university, he served as a member of the Kharkiv Mathematical Society, influencing the local research agenda. His professional standing was further evidenced by his membership in the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Scientific Contribution

Sintsov gained recognition for his technical research regarding the theory of conic sections and the complexities of non-holonomic geometry. His work within the Russian and later Soviet mathematical circles was recognized through the awarding of the Order of the Red Banner of Labour. He remained an active participant in his field throughout his tenure in Kharkiv, contributing to the development of rigorous mathematical practices.

Legacy and Burial

Upon his death in 1946 at the age of 78, Sintsov was interred in Kharkiv. His final resting places include the St. John Useknovensky cemetery and the Thirteenth City Cemetery. His scholarly footprint remains linked to the history of the Kharkiv mathematical school, reflecting the broader development of Soviet science during the first half of the twentieth century.
