Academic and Media Career
Born in Moscow in 1967, Bykov pursued his education at the Faculty of Journalism at Moscow State University. His early professional life involved teaching literature and Soviet history within secondary schools, alongside a tenure as a professor at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations. Bykov gained significant critical recognition for his biographical studies of major Russian literary figures. His 2005 work on Boris Pasternak secured both the Bolshaya Kniga and National Bestseller prizes in 2006. He subsequently authored biographical volumes on Maxim Gorky and Bulat Okudzhava. His wider bibliography encompasses extensive collections of essays on Soviet literature, various novels, and numerous volumes of poetry, cementing his status as a prolific contributor to Russian letters.
Political Exile and Legal Status
Following his public opposition to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Bykov was designated a foreign agent by the Russian Ministry of Justice in 2022. This status led to the removal of his books from retail shelves and various financial penalties. He has since continued his scholarly pursuits abroad, holding a visiting critic position at Cornell University and becoming the Inaugural Humanities Center Scholar in Exile at the University of Rochester. In 2025, his legal situation intensified as he was placed on a federal wanted list and subsequently sentenced in absentia to seven years, following his designation by Rosfinmonitoring as a terrorist and extremist.
Health Crisis
In April 2019, while traveling on a flight to Ufa, Bykov collapsed and required hospitalization. Initial reports cited diabetes, a claim Bykov later contested. Investigations by Bellingcat into the circumstances of his sudden illness suggested a potential poisoning by government agents, noting similarities to the subsequent medical emergency involving Alexei Navalny.
