Dana Zátopková

A distance of 55.73 metres established a world record in 1958, marking the career of the 35-year-old Czech javelin thrower. This milestone solidified her standing within international athletics, following a gold medal performance at the 1952 Summer Olympics and consistent appearances across four separate iterations of the Olympic Games throughout her lengthy career.

Early Life and Athletic Foundation

Born in 1922 in Fryštát, Karviná, Dana Zátopková, née Ingrová, emerged as a prominent figure in Czechoslovak sports. Her athletic background was rooted in her membership with the Sokol organization. While she is primarily noted for her mastery of the javelin, her early engagement with physical competition included participation in the sport of handball.

Olympic and Competitive Highlights

Zátopková participated in the 1948, 1952, 1956, and 1960 Summer Olympics. She followed this success with a silver medal at the 1960 Olympics.

Record Performance and Recognition

In 1958, she achieved a world record throw of 55.73 metres, becoming the oldest woman in athletics to set such a mark at 35 years and 255 days old. Beyond her active tenure as a competitor, she served as a track and field coach. Her contributions to the sport and her public life were acknowledged through the Czech Medal of Merit in 2003 and the Silver Olympic Order in 1995.

Legacy and Honors

Throughout her later years, she received several honorary citizenships, including honors from Prague, Uherské Hradiště, Kopřivnice, and Lázně Toušeň. In 1957, she and her husband acted as witnesses for the wedding of Olga Fikotová and Harold Connolly, having sought assistance from president Antonín Zápotocký to facilitate the union. Zátopková died in 2020 at the Central Military Hospital in Prague and was interred at the Wallachian Open Air Museum.
