He argues that the human experience possesses a primitive, foundational layer of self-awareness that precedes reflective introspection. Intersubjectivity and Social Ontology

Since 2010, his research has expanded into social ontology, exploring themes of collective intentionality, shame, and we-experiences. His 2025 work, 'Being We', contributes to this ongoing exploration of the I-thou relation.

Institutional Influence and Recognition

In 2002, Zahavi became the director of the Center for Subjectivity Research (CFS) at the University of Copenhagen. Under his leadership, the center has bridged gaps between diverse philosophical traditions and empirical research. His academic career includes a professorship at the University of Oxford from 2018 to 2021. Throughout his career, he has been recognized with numerous honors, including the 2011 Carlsberg Foundation Research Prize and his appointment as a Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog in 2017.
