Early Legal Training and Artistic Shift
Born at Vestre Aker in 1852, he was the son of a civil servant and author. Although his father urged him toward a legal career, leading him to graduate cand.jur. from the University of Oslo in 1873, he simultaneously pursued artistic development. His formal training included studies at the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry and later at the Baden School of Art in Karlsruhe under Hans Gude. Between 1875 and 1878, he continued his technical education at the Königliche Akademie in Berlin.

Living in Paris during 1881 and 1882 solidified his commitment to the realism movement. He turned his attention to everyday life, documenting themes that the establishment often ignored. His novel, Albertine, accompanied his painting of the same name. When the book was published, it triggered a public scandal that resulted in its immediate confiscation by the police, underscoring the tension between his chosen subject matter and the prevailing social norms of the era.
Collaborative Circles and Academic Leadership
His influence expanded through his active participation in the Skagen Painters and the Grez colony. He served as the editor-in-chief for the bohemian journal Impressionisten from 1886 to 1890 and worked as a journalist for Verdens Gang. From 1902 to 1909, he taught at the Académie Colarossi in Paris. He culminated his career as the first professor and director of the Norwegian Academy of Arts, holding the position until his death in 1925.
