Christian Martin Frähn

German and Russian numismatist and historian

Over 150 academic works were produced by Christian Martin Frähn, a German-born scholar who transformed the study of Islamic numismatics and Oriental antiquities. Settling in the Russian Empire in 1807, he moved beyond basic cataloging to bridge the gap between material evidence and the historical reconstruction of Early Rus and Volga Bulgaria using Arabic sources.

Academic Foundations and Early Career

Born in Rostock in 1782, Frähn pursued his initial Oriental studies under Tychsen at the University of Rostock, subsequently attending the University of Göttingen and the University of Tübingen. In 1804, he took a position as a Latin master at Pestalozzi's institute. By 1806, he began lecturing as a Privatdozent at his alma mater in Rostock, establishing the pedagogical foundation for his later career.

Transition to the Russian Empire

In 1807, Frähn accepted the chair of Oriental languages at the Kazan Imperial University. While offered the opportunity to succeed Tychsen in Rostock in 1815, he chose to relocate to Saint Petersburg. There, he founded the Asiatic Museum of the Academy of Sciences, serving as its director until 1842. During his residence in Russia, he maintained an active correspondence with scholars such as Samuel Gottlieb Rudolph Henzi.

Contributions to Numismatics and History

Frähn specialized in the analysis of medieval Oriental coinage. His research methodology involved identifying minting locations and establishing chronological sequences for dynasties and rulers. His 1804 description of medals from the Samanid and Buyid rulers was notably authored in Arabic due to a lack of Latin type. His published corpus includes works such as Numophylacium orientale Pototianum, released in 1813, and the 1821 catalogue of the muhammedanische Münzkabinett.
