Early Career and Formula Progression
Klien began his motorsport training at age 13 after attending a go-kart race. Between 1996 and 1998, he competed in Switzerland and Austria, claiming a title in his first year of karting. His transition to open-wheel racing saw him finish fourth in the 1999 Formula BMW ADAC Junior Cup. By 2002, Klien secured the German Formula Renault title and later finished as runner-up in the Formula Three Euroseries, supported by a victory at the 2003 Marlboro Masters at Zandvoort.

Signed to Jaguar in December 2003, Klien debuted in 2004 alongside teammate Mark Webber. He remains notable for outqualifying Webber during his tenure. Following the acquisition of Jaguar by Red Bull in late 2004, the team was rebranded. Klien shared the cockpit with Vitantonio Liuzzi during the 2005 season.
Reserve Roles and Endurance Racing
Following his departure from Red Bull, Klien pursued testing opportunities within Formula One. In November 2006, he joined Honda Racing as a reserve driver. He later secured a test and reserve position with BMW Sauber in 2008, working alongside Marko Asmer. Beyond his single-seater commitments, Klien expanded his career into endurance racing, including driving the Peugeot 908 HDi FAP at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
