Chappell Roan

The single "Good Luck, Babe!" reached number four on the US Billboard Hot 100, marking a pivotal moment in the career of Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, known professionally as Chappell Roan. Born in Willard, Missouri, in 1998, she emerged as a prominent figure in pop music, characterized by a distinct drag-influenced aesthetic and lyrical narratives that explore queer identity.

Early Development and Transition

Raised in a conservative environment, Roan began formal piano training at twelve and performed publicly by thirteen. After attending summer camp at the Interlochen Center for the Arts, she gained early recognition by uploading original music to YouTube. She secured a deal with Atlantic Records in 2015, adopting her stage name in 2016 to honor her late grandfather, Dennis K. Chappell. Her debut EP, School Nights, was released in 2017, followed by a relocation to Los Angeles in 2018.

Artistic Independence and Collaboration

Roan collaborated with producer Dan Nigro to release "Pink Pony Club" in 2020, a song inspired by a visit to a West Hollywood gay bar. Despite the track gaining critical notice, she was dropped by Atlantic Records later that year. She pursued an independent career while working various service jobs, returning to Missouri briefly before reuniting with Nigro in 2022 to release "Naked in Manhattan" and "Femininomenon."

Global Breakthrough

In 2023, Roan signed to Amusement Records, a label partnership with Island Records. This led to the release of her debut studio album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. The project experienced a significant resurgence in 2024 alongside the success of "Good Luck, Babe!". The album peaked at number two on the US Billboard 200, while her 2020 track "Pink Pony Club" topped the UK singles chart.
