Chao Yuen Ren: The Man Who Wrote a 92-Word Poem in One Syllable

In 1930 a song he composed to a friend's poem became a pop hit across China. In 1928 a romanization system he designed became the Republic of China's official standard for writing Mandarin in Latin letters. Somewhere in between he wrote a ninety-two-character classical Chinese poem using only the syllable "shi," in four different tones, that makes perfect sense read silently and total nonsense read aloud — a deliberate stunt built to prove a point about the limits of romanizing literary Chinese. Chao Yuen Ren trained as a mathematician and physicist, earned his doctorate in philosophy, and ended up known to history as the father of modern Chinese linguistics, almost as an afterthought to everything else he could do.

A Boxer Indemnity Scholar

He was born Zhao Yuanren on November 3, 1892, in Tianjin, to a family whose ancestral home was in Changzhou, Jiangsu, though frequent relocations during his childhood exposed him to four different Chinese dialects by the time he was twelve — an accident of an itinerant upbringing that turned out to be direct training for the career he would eventually have. In 1910 he won a Boxer Indemnity Scholarship, one of the programs funded by returned Chinese indemnity payments to send promising students to American universities, and enrolled at Cornell to study mathematics and physics. There he became close friends with Hu Shih, who would go on to lead the New Culture Movement — a friendship that later put Chao at the ceremonial center of that movement's break with tradition. His interests drifted from mathematics toward philosophy and languages, and he completed a PhD at Harvard in 1918 with a dissertation on continuity as a methodological problem, along the way picking up fluent German and French, working Japanese, and reading knowledge of Ancient Greek and Latin.

In 1920 he married the physician Yang Buwei in a deliberately modern, simplified ceremony stripped of traditional ritual, attended by Hu Shih, whose newspaper account of the wedding turned the couple into public symbols of China's New Culture reform movement almost overnight.

Four Great Teachers

Back in China, Chao taught mathematics at Tsinghua University, spent a year at Harvard, and returned to Tsinghua in 1925 to teach linguistics and music, quickly becoming grouped with Wang Guowei, Liang Qichao, and Chen Yinke as one of the university's "Four Great Teachers" — a remarkable peer group for a man who had trained as a physicist. From 1926 he conducted systematic surveys of the Wu dialect group, and from 1928 carried out extensive linguistic fieldwork for the Academia Sinica's Institute of History and Philology, later collaborating with Luo Changpei to translate the Swedish sinologist Bernhard Karlgren's foundational studies of Chinese historical phonology into Chinese, published in 1940.

Gwoyeu Romatzyh and the Grammar of Spoken Chinese

Chao's best-known single achievement is Gwoyeu Romatzyh, a romanization system officially adopted by the Republic of China on September 28, 1928, that represented Mandarin's tones not with diacritical marks but by varying the spelling of syllables themselves — an ingenious, if famously demanding, solution to the problem of writing tonal Chinese in the Latin alphabet without relying on tools imported wholesale from Western phonetics. He recorded the adoption in his own diary using the system itself: "G.R. yii yu jeou yueh 26 ry gong buh le. Hoo-ray!!!" He went on to design the "General Chinese" phonetic system for representing multiple Chinese varieties at once, and contributed the "Chao tone letters" to the International Phonetic Alphabet, a pitch-contour notation still used by linguists worldwide to describe tone.

His *Mandarin Primer* (1948) became one of the most widely used Chinese-language textbooks of the twentieth century, and his *A Grammar of Spoken Chinese* (1968) is still regarded as among the most important modern works on Chinese grammar, later translated into Chinese twice. He relocated permanently to the United States in 1938, taught at UC Berkeley from 1947 to 1960, became the university's Agassiz Professor of Oriental Languages in 1952, served as president of the Linguistic Society of America in 1945, and became a naturalized American citizen in 1954.

The Lion-Eating Poet and Other Wordplay

Chao's linguistic range extended into deliberate literary stunts with a serious point behind them. In 1916 he refined the classical Chinese poem "Lion-Eating Poet in the Stone Den" into a ninety-two-character composition using only the syllable *shi* in various tones — perfectly legible on the page in classical Chinese characters, utterly unintelligible spoken aloud, an argument in verse form against the idea that literary Chinese could simply be transliterated into a spoken romanized standard. He translated Lewis Carroll's *Alice's Adventures in Wonderland* into Chinese while preserving its puns and wordplay, a translation still cited as a classic feat of linguistic art, and separately tackled "Jabberwocky," inventing new Chinese characters to capture Carroll's invented English words.

He was also, without formal musical training, a working composer: his 1928 "New Poetry Songbook" and his song "How Could I Help Thinking of Her," set to lyrics by linguist Liu Bannong, became a genuine pop hit in 1930s China. He wrote children's songs in 1935 and argued explicitly against any hierarchy separating Western from non-Western musical traditions. With his wife he even shaped everyday English: their 1946 cookbook *How to Cook and Eat in Chinese*, with English text contributed by daughter Rulan, is credited with coining the now-standard terms "pot sticker" and "stir fry."

Family and Late Return

He and Yang Buwei raised three daughters who each built substantial careers — Rulan Chao Pian became a Harvard professor of East Asian studies and music, Nova Chao a Harvard-trained chemist and member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Lensey Namioka a children's book author and mathematician. Chao and Yang co-wrote a family memoir, *Life with Chaos*, built around the same linguistic playfulness that ran through his professional work. Yang Buwei died in March 1981; Chao, who had returned to China in 1973 at Zhou Enlai's invitation and again in 1981 at Deng Xiaoping's, died in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on February 25, 1982, at eighty-nine.

Why Chao Yuen Ren Is Called a Genius

The case is built on sheer range operating at genuine depth in each direction rather than a single towering achievement: a trained physicist and mathematician who became, by the consensus of his field, the founding figure of modern scientific Chinese linguistics, designing a national romanization system, authoring the standard reference grammar of spoken Mandarin, inventing a notation for tone still used today, and doing all of it while also composing a national pop song, translating Lewis Carroll's wordplay into working Chinese puns, and constructing a ninety-two-syllable poem as a linguistic proof. Colleagues and later scholars have called him, in Chinese-language commemorative volumes, the "father of modern Chinese linguistics" outright — an honorific rarely applied so unanimously within any field.

The honest complication is smaller here than for most figures of his era: Chao's reputation was built almost entirely on scholarly and creative output rather than political maneuvering or state patronage, and it has held up under decades of subsequent linguistic scholarship rather than fading. If there is a caveat, it is that Gwoyeu Romatzyh itself, his most publicly visible invention, was eventually superseded by pinyin in the 1990s — proof that even his signature practical achievement was, in the end, one working solution among several rather than a permanent one.

Legacy

The Yuen Ren Society, founded in the 1990s to promote Chinese dialect fieldwork, carries his name as a standing acknowledgment of the discipline he essentially built from nothing, and his students, including Jerry Norman and Anne O. Yue-Hashimoto, carried his methods into the next generation of Chinese linguistics. Few scholars of any nationality have left so wide a trail — a grammar still assigned in classrooms, a tone notation still used in transcription, and a pop song people were still humming decades after he wrote it, almost as a hobby.
