Following his Sundance success, Singer achieved critical recognition for the 1995 crime thriller The Usual Suspects. He subsequently directed the 1998 adaptation of Stephen King's novella Apt Pupil. At the turn of the century, he pivoted to large-scale superhero cinema, directing X-Men in 2000 and its follow-up X2 in 2003. He received Saturn Awards for Best Director for both X-Men and his later work.

In 2006, Singer directed Superman Returns for Warner Bros. Pictures, a project filmed in Australia. Throughout the 2010s, his work focused heavily on the X-Men franchise, including directing X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse, as well as producing and co-writing X-Men: First Class. He also directed the fantasy film Jack the Giant Slayer in 2013 and worked on the Queen biographical film Bohemian Rhapsody in 2018.
