Bryan Ruiz stands as the only footballer from Central America to have competed in the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Europa League, and the CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores. A left-footed attacking midfielder and second striker from San José, Costa Rica, he managed a professional career spanning nearly two decades across Europe and his home nation before retiring in 2022.
Early Development and Belgian Success
Ruiz began his professional trajectory at age 18 with Alajuelense in Costa Rica, debuting on 30 November 2003. Known as La comadreja for his agile movement, he contributed to the team's 2004 CONCACAF Champions' Cup and 2005 UNCAF Interclub Cup victories. In 2006, he moved to Belgium, signing with Gent. He finished his time in the Belgian League as both the captain and the club's leading scorer, highlighted by a hat-trick against Lokeren in December 2007.

In 2009, Ruiz joined FC Twente on a four-year contract. His impact was immediate; he scored in ten consecutive matches during the 2009 campaign and netted 24 goals to lead the club to their first Eredivisie title in 2010. Following this success, he transferred to Fulham in the Premier League in August 2011. His time in England was interrupted by a foot fracture in 2012, though he remained a fixture in the side until a 2014 loan move to PSV Eindhoven.
European Campaigns and Brazilian Exit
Ruiz signed with Sporting CP in 2015, marking his debut with a Supertaça victory against Benfica. He competed in the UEFA Europa League and the Primeira Liga until his move to Santos FC in 2018. His tenure in Brazil ended in controversy in July 2020, as he terminated his contract citing wage breaches and moral damage after a period of limited playing time under managers Jorge Sampaoli and Jesualdo Ferreira.
International Milestones with Los Ticos
He captained the squad during a 3–1 victory over Uruguay and scored the winning goal against Italy to secure advancement to the round of 16.
