Bjarke Ingels, born in Copenhagen in 1974, is a Danish architect whose career is defined by large-scale residential experiments and innovative infrastructure. Educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, he moved beyond early concepts to establish the Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), securing his reputation through complex, high-density housing projects that challenge traditional urban planning standards.
Early Practice and PLOT
After graduating in 1999, Ingels gained initial experience working for Rem Koolhaas at the Office for Metropolitan Architecture in Rotterdam. In 2001, he returned to Denmark to co-found the practice PLOT with Julien de Smedt. The firm gained immediate attention for projects like the Islands Brygge Harbour Bath and the Maritime Youth House in Copenhagen. Their primary breakthrough, the VM Houses in Ørestad, utilized unconventional geometry to maximize sunlight and privacy. The firm also completed the snowflake-shaped Helsingør Psychiatric Hospital in 2005 before disbanding later that year.

In 2006, Ingels launched Bjarke Ingels Group, an firm that would grow to employ 400 people by 2015. His early work under this banner focused on the Ørestad district, specifically the Mountain Dwellings. This structure integrated 10,000 square meters of housing with a massive parking garage, featuring a photorealistic mural of the Himalayas and a terrace system that allowed for private outdoor space in a dense urban environment. This was followed by the 8 House, a 61,000-square-meter development that functioned as the largest private project in Scandinavian history, incorporating retail, commercial space, and residential units within a figure-eight layout.
Global Expansion and Teaching
Ingels relocated to New York City in 2012, expanding his reach to include projects like VIA 57 West. His work includes collaborative ventures such as the Google North Bayshore headquarters and the Amager Resource Center, a waste-to-energy plant that features a functional ski slope on its exterior. Alongside his design practice, Ingels has held visiting professorships at the Rice University School of Architecture, the Harvard Graduate School of Design, Columbia University, and the Yale School of Architecture. His contributions have earned numerous accolades, including the C. F. Hansen Medal, the European Prize for Architecture, and the Niels Prize.
