Björn Ferry

The gold medal in the 2010 Winter Olympic pursuit event held in Vancouver marked the first time a Swedish male biathlete had reached the top of the podium in half a century. Björn Ferry secured this victory by overtaking the race leader on the final lap, finishing with a commanding performance that capped his third appearance at the Games.

Early Career and Development

Born in 1978 in Storuman Municipality, Sweden, Ferry began his international career in 2001. His initial competitive efforts took place at the World Cup in Hochfilzen, where he earned points after just three races. During his first season, he held a ranking of 36th. Under the guidance of his personal coach, German trainer Wolfgang Pichler, Ferry steadily improved his global standings, reaching the top ten by the 2006–2007 season.

International Breakthroughs

Ferry found notable success in Italy, specifically in Antholz-Anterselva, where he claimed his first two World Cup victories in the pursuit discipline during the 2007–2008 and 2008–2009 seasons. In 2007, he reached a career milestone by winning gold in the mixed relay at the Biathlon World Championships alongside teammates Helena Jonsson, Anna Carin Olofsson, and Carl Johan Bergman. Although his 2009–2010 season performance dipped to a 16th-place world ranking, his subsequent Olympic gold in Vancouver solidified his place in the sport before his retirement at the conclusion of the 2013–14 season.

Stance on Anti-Doping

Throughout his career, Ferry maintained a vocal opposition to the use of performance-enhancing substances in international athletics. His comments regarding the ethics of sport were often blunt, including public remarks in 2009 that drew death threats. He advocated for significantly harsher penalties for doping violations, suggesting that the problem would remain persistent without more severe deterrents.

Climate Advocacy

Ferry and his wife, world champion arm wrestler Heidi Andersson, have focused their public life on environmental issues. In 2017, Ferry announced he had ceased air travel to reduce his carbon footprint. This commitment was featured in the 2018 television series Storuman Forever. His advocacy helped bring attention to the concept of flight shame, which highlights the environmental impact of the airline industry.
