The career of Birkir Már Sævarsson spans over two decades of professional football, beginning with his debut at Valur in 2003. Born in Reykjavík in 1984, the defender established a reputation for endurance and tactical flexibility while competing across the Icelandic, Norwegian, and Swedish top-tier league systems before moving to Nacka in March 2025.

Early Development and Norwegian Tenure

Birkir secured his professional start with Valur, winning the 2007 Úrvalsdeild title. In 2008, he transitioned to the Norwegian Tippeligaen to join SK Brann. Initially utilized as a right back, he spent significant time on the left flank during the 2009 season. His consistency was notable; he played every minute of every competitive fixture throughout the 2012 and 2013 campaigns. Following a coaching change under Rikard Norling, his playing time diminished, leading to his departure in December 2014.

Swedish League Performance

Moving to Sweden, he joined Hammarby IF for the 2015 season. His versatility remained a hallmark of his play as he transitioned from centre-back to his preferred position on the right flank. Supporters voted him newcomer of the year for his contributions. During his tenure, he made dozens of appearances, including 29 games in 2017, before departing the club at the expiration of his contract to pursue opportunities ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

International Competition

Birkir earned his first international cap for Iceland in a 1-1 draw against Liechtenstein in 2007. His role became pivotal during UEFA Euro 2016, where he played every minute of the tournament. His defensive duties included marking Cristiano Ronaldo and Raheem Sterling during Iceland’s progression to the quarter-finals. He eventually concluded his international career on 14 November 2021 against North Macedonia.

Final Years and Transition

Returning to his native Iceland in 2018, he re-signed with Valur on a three-year contract, where he played alongside his brother, Aron Elí Sævarsson. Beyond his duties as a player, he briefly served as an assistant coach for Knattspyrnufélagið Hlíðarendi starting in April 2019. Following the 2024 Besta deild karla season, he retired from professional football, eventually signing with Nacka in March 2025.
