Early Military Service and Education
Born in 1948 in Ramat Gan, Israel, Arad served in the Israel Defense Forces beginning in 1965. During the 1967 Six-Day War, he sustained injuries that necessitated a 15-month recovery period. Following the completion of his military service in 1968, he relocated to the United States in 1970 to pursue higher education. Arad worked as a truck driver and Hebrew teacher to fund his studies at Hofstra University, eventually graduating with a BBA from the Frank G. Zarb School of Business in 1972.

In the 1990s, Arad became the CEO of Toy Biz. Alongside co-owner Isaac Perlmutter, he engaged in a significant corporate conflict against Carl Icahn and Ron Perelman regarding the future of Marvel Comics following its 1996 bankruptcy filing. The resulting agreement saw Toy Biz assume control of the publisher. As part of this transition, Arad managed the recovery of various character rights, including those for Spider-Man, which had previously been sold to other entities.
Independent Production Ventures
Arad resigned from his positions at Marvel Entertainment and Marvel Studios on May 31, 2006, to establish Arad Productions, also known as Arad Animation. His independent firm began by producing films licensed by Marvel that remained separate from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His first project outside of this licensing scope was the 2007 film Bratz. Subsequent endeavors included adaptations of properties such as Ghost in the Shell, Maximum Ride, Uncharted, Infamous, Metal Gear Solid, and The Legend of Zelda.
Professional Affiliations and Public Stance
Throughout his career, Arad has held executive roles at Sony Pictures and maintained involvement in various media sectors. In August 2010, he joined the American branch of the animation studio Production I.G, based in Los Angeles, California. Beyond his professional work, Arad remains a vocal supporter of Israel. In 2024, he publicly expressed opposition to a ceasefire in the Gaza war and criticized Senator Chuck Schumer for his comments regarding Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
