A solo flight in a MiG-21 in 2018 established Avani Chaturvedi as the first Indian woman pilot to achieve the feat. Born in 1993 in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, her entry into the Indian Air Force fighter squadron redefined the role of female personnel within the national military structure, following a strategic shift in government policy regarding fighter stream access.
Early Education and Military Path
Chaturvedi completed her schooling in Deolond, located in the Shahdol district. She later pursued a Bachelor of Technology degree at Banasthali Vidyapith in Rajasthan, graduating in 2014. Her initial exposure to aviation occurred through the university's flying club. After passing the Air Force Common Admission Test, she began training at the Air Force Academy, eventually commissioned by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on 18 June 2016.

In October 2015, the Indian government moved to open combat roles to women. Chaturvedi was inducted into a fighter squadron alongside Mohana Singh Jitarwal and Bhawana Kanth. Her first posting followed at AFS Bidar, where she gained experience operating the Hawk Advanced Jet Trainer. Her career trajectory included a promotion to the rank of Flight Lieutenant in 2018.
Operational Milestones
Beyond her solo flight accomplishment, Chaturvedi continued to expand her operational profile. She is currently posted with the No. 23 Squadron Panthers based in Suratgarh, Rajasthan. In 2023, she reached a further milestone by participating in an aerial wargame held in Japan, marking the first time a female Indian fighter pilot engaged in such an international exercise.
Recognition and Personal Details
Her service has been recognized through various honors, including the Nari Shakti Puraskar, which she received from President Ram Nath Kovind on 9 March 2020. Banasthali Vidyapeeth also conferred upon her a doctorate degree in 2018. Outside of her professional duties, she participates in chess, table tennis, painting, and sketching. She married Flight Lieutenant Vineet Chikara in November 2019.
