Early Life and Education
Born in Grabtown, North Carolina, in 1922, Gardner was the youngest of seven children. After her family lost their farm during the Depression, they relocated to Newport News, Virginia. Following her father's death from bronchitis in 1938, she attended high school in Rock Ridge and later studied secretarial skills at Atlantic Christian College, now Barton College, for approximately one year.

Gardner transitioned from uncredited walk-on appearances to leading roles during the 1950s. She starred in Show Boat and Pandora and the Flying Dutchman in 1951, followed by The Snows of Kilimanjaro and Mogambo in 1952 and 1953, respectively. Her performance in Mogambo secured an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. She often portrayed characters of noble status, including duchesses and baronesses, while maintaining an off-screen persona noted for its direct, witty delivery.
Later Career and Awards
Her work continued into the 1960s with films such as 55 Days at Peking, Seven Days in May, and The Night of the Iguana, for which she received BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations. In 1964, she was honored with the Silver Shell for Best Actress. She remained active in the film industry until 1986. Gardner held a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and maintained a personal philosophy of atheism.
