Academic Formation and Research
Born in Tevče in 1875, Stegenšek pursued a multi-disciplinary education. Following his initial theological studies, he relocated to Rome. There, he engaged in advanced research concerning archaeology and art history, working under the direct guidance of Joseph Wilpert. This period of concentrated study provided the analytical framework for his later academic contributions. In 1906, he achieved a doctorate in philosophical sciences from the University of Graz.

Stegenšek served as a pioneer in the systematic cataloging of regional monuments. His significant editorial and investigative work focused on the Lavantine Diocese. He published two comprehensive volumes: Dekanija Gornji Grad in 1905 and Konjiška Dekanija in 1909. These works were unique for the era, as he personally handled the photography and drawing requirements for the illustrations, and managed the publication process independently.
Institutional Roles and Later Life
His expertise earned him official recognition within the cultural institutions of his time. Upon the founding of the Historic Society for Slovene Styria in 1906, he became an active member. Concurrently, the Committee for the Protection of Monuments in Vienna appointed him as an honorary conservator for the region of Styria. Stegenšek died in Maribor in 1920 and is interred at the Maribor Cemetery.
