Andriy Voronin

Ukrainian association football player and manager

Andriy Voronin established himself in German professional football during the 2002–03 season, when he became the top goalscorer in the 2. Bundesliga while playing for Mainz 05. This achievement catalyzed his transition into the Bundesliga, eventually leading to a career that spanned top-flight clubs across Europe and seventy-four appearances for the Ukrainian national team.

Early Career in Germany

Born in Odesa on 21 July 1979, Voronin left his youth club, Chornomorets Odesa, in 1995 to join Borussia Mönchengladbach. He debuted in the Bundesliga against Bayern Munich in 1997 at the age of eighteen. After struggling for consistent playing time, he transferred to Mainz 05 for a fee of 45,000 euros. His tenure at Mainz proved pivotal, as his goal-scoring record attracted significant attention from larger clubs, ultimately prompting a move to 1. FC Köln after Mainz failed to achieve promotion.
