Bartkowiak developed technical expertise through commercial and industrial projects for firms including IBM, Xerox, American Express, Pepsi, Coca-Cola, and Toyota. His feature film debut as a cinematographer came with the 1975 independent production Deadly Hero. He gained industry recognition following his photography on the television film The Five Forty-Eight. This work led to a productive decade-long collaboration with director Sidney Lumet between 1981 and 1993. As a member of the American Society of Cinematographers, he earned the organization’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2025.
Transition to Directing
At the start of the 21st century, Bartkowiak shifted his professional focus toward directing. His debut feature in this capacity was the 2000 release Romeo Must Die. He continued in the action genre with Exit Wounds in 2001 and Cradle 2 the Grave in 2003. He subsequently directed adaptations of video game intellectual properties, including Doom in 2005 and Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li in 2009. His later directorial output includes Maximum Impact, released in 2017, and Dead Reckoning in 2020.

Bartkowiak married actress Diane Venora in 1980, a union that lasted until 1989. They share a daughter named Madzia. He is also the father of a daughter, Ania, and a son, Marco.
