Early Development and Education
Born Alain-Bernard Bongo, he later adopted the name Ali and added the patronymic Ondimba in 2003. His upbringing included schooling in France and law studies at the University of Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne. He became a follower of Islam in 1973. In 2018, he received an honorary doctorate from Wuhan University.

Entering politics in 1981 by joining the Gabonese Democratic Party, he rose through the ranks to serve in various capacities. He held the position of Minister for Foreign Affairs from 1989 to 1991. After his initial term in the government, he served as a deputy in the National Assembly for several years, representing Bongoville and the Haut-Ogooué Province.
Presidential Tenure and Transition
Following the death of his father in 2009, he successfully transitioned to the presidency. His time in office was characterized by his management of the Gabonese Democratic Party and a long-standing political dynasty. His presidency concluded abruptly on 30 August 2023, when his cousin, Brice Oligui Nguema, led a coup d'état that resulted in the establishment of the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions.
