The appointment of Algirdas Butkevičius as Prime Minister of Lithuania on 7 December 2012 followed a parliamentary career that began in 1996. Early Career and Education
After graduating from Šeduva Secondary School in 1977, Butkevičius completed military service with the Soviet Army Signals-Communications Troops as a Junior Sergeant. He later pursued an academic path in economics and management, earning an engineering economist diploma from Vilnius Civil Engineering Institute, now known as Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, in 1984. His educational background includes a Master's degree from Kaunas University of Technology and a Doctorate in Economics obtained in 2008. Butkevičius maintained a long-standing tenure in the Seimas, serving terms between 1996 and 2000, 2000 and 2004, 2004 and 2008, 2012 and 2016, 2016 and 2020, and returning to the chamber in 2024. During his legislative career, he chaired the Committee on Budget and Finance. His ministerial appointments included serving as Minister of Finance from 2004 to 2005, followed by his role as Minister of Transport and Communications from 2006 to 2008.
Leadership as Prime Minister
In the 2012 parliamentary elections, Butkevičius secured victory during the first round of voting. Following this electoral success, the Seimas elected him as prime minister-designate. His cabinet received formal swearing-in on 13 December 2012. He directed the government of Lithuania until 2016. Throughout this period, he simultaneously held the chairmanship of the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania, a position he occupied from 2009 until 2017.
