Political Ascent and Ministerial Service

Kalvītis was a founding member of the People's Party in 1997. His parliamentary career began with his election to the Saeima in 1998. He held two significant ministerial portfolios early in his career, serving as the minister of agriculture from 1999 to 2000 and as the minister of economics from 2000 to 2002. In 2002, he was re-elected to the legislature and assumed the role of leader for the People's Party parliamentary faction.

Governance and Coalition Leadership

In December 2004, Kalvītis became Prime Minister. His initial administration relied on a coalition of the People's Party, the New Era Party, the Union of Greens and Farmers, and Latvia's First Party. Following the withdrawal of the New Era Party in 2006, he governed through a minority coalition. After securing a victory in the October 2006 elections, his government was the first since 1991 to be re-elected, expanding its majority with the inclusion of the For Fatherland and Freedom/LNNK party.

Resignation and Corporate Transition

The tenure of Kalvītis concluded in late 2007, following public dissent regarding his decision to dismiss Aleksejs Loskutovs, the head of the anti-corruption bureau. He submitted his resignation to President Valdis Zatlers on 5 December 2007, serving in a caretaker capacity until Ivars Godmanis succeeded him. He ended his parliamentary mandate on 1 April 2009. His subsequent professional career included leadership roles at Tet, Latvijas Balzams, Hockey Club Dinamo Riga, Conexus Baltic Grid, and Latvijas Gāze, alongside his appointment as president of the Latvian Ice Hockey Federation in 2016.
