Early life and education
Aimo Cajander worked in biology at a period when the field was still deciding what counted as an answer.
Aimo Cajander was born at Uusikaupunki in 1879. His recorded nationality is Finland. He was educated at Evo and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München.
Around the turn of the twentieth century the sciences fractured into specialisms and simultaneously became national assets, funded and directed on a scale no earlier generation had seen.

Aimo Cajander is associated first and foremost with "Model Cajander", the fashion of many Finnish soldiers in Winter War. Biology progresses by comparison, and the comparisons only become convincing once thousands of cases are in hand.

Professional transition and context
Like many of his contemporaries, Aimo Cajander moved between biology and botany without regarding the boundaries as real.
The Finland setting is not incidental. National academies, funding and language decided which findings travelled and which stayed local, in this period as in ours.
Honours and death
His work was formally recognised with the Grand Cross of the Order of the Holy Lamb, Grand Cross of the Order of the White Rose of Finland and Grand Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.
The measure that matters is durability. Results that survive re-examination become the floor of a discipline, and it is on that floor that everything afterwards is built.
Death came in 1943, at 64. By then the contribution had passed into the settled body of biology, where it is used without being credited - the surest sign that it was right.
