The title of mannequin queen, bestowed upon Aira Samulin in 1954, served as a springboard for her multifaceted career as a dance teacher, entrepreneur, and politician. Spanning nearly a century, her professional journey reflected significant shifts in Finnish society and culture, beginning in the border village of Ignoila and extending into the political chambers of Helsinki and Espoo.

Early Life and War

Born on 27 February 1927 in Ignoila, Salmi, Samulin experienced the direct impacts of the Continuation War. Her father, a troop leader, was killed in action on 27 July 1941. This period of conflict left a lasting impression on her life, later reflected in her advocacy for national defense traditions and her receipt of the Memorial medal of the Continuation War.

Dance and Fashion Entrepreneurship

Samulin established a presence in the Finnish arts and fashion sectors by integrating dance with professional presentation. In the 1960s, she founded the fashion dance school Rytmikkäät mannekiinit. Her involvement in media included working as a filming secretary at Suomen Filmiteollisuus and acting, notably playing herself in the film Tango Kabaree and the production Uuno Turhapuro – This Is My Life.

Political and Civic Engagement

Her transition into public service involved roles in municipal governance across two decades. From 1989 to 1996, she served on the Espoo city council representing the Centre Party. She later joined the Helsinki City Council in 1997 for the National Coalition Party, eventually becoming a deputy member in 2001. Her civic work included positions on the Helsinki Theatre Foundation and the Helsinki Week Foundation environmental board.

Recognition and Legacy

Samulin received numerous honors for her contributions to business and society. In 1991, she was appointed a Knight of the Order of the Lion of Finland. Subsequent recognition included the 2011 life's work award from the Regional Organisation of Enterprises in Helsinki and the 2017 life's work award in the fashion industry from the Finnish central chamber of commerce. She authored several books, including Soturi ja sunnuntailapsi and Auringonpimennys.
