Keyless Signature Infrastructure emerged from the practical necessity of securing electronic data through hash-function cryptography rather than traditional key management. Ahto Buldas, the inventor of this system, has spent decades bridging the gap between theoretical mathematics and national-level digital security infrastructure. His work has fundamentally altered how digital signatures function in Estonia and beyond.
Early Life and Academic Foundation
Born in Tallinn in 1967, Ahto Buldas pursued his higher education at Tallinn University of Technology. His academic progression through the institution included earning his MSc degree in 1993, followed by his PhD in 1999. Prior to his formal research career, he fulfilled a two-year conscription period serving as an artillery officer in the Soviet Army while stationed in Siberia.

Take the IQ test →National Digital Infrastructure
Between 1996 and 2002, Buldas contributed significantly to the development of the Estonian Digital Signature Act and the national ID-card system. This project resulted in the only national-level public-key infrastructure (PKI) to achieve widespread public adoption for legally binding signatures. His professional tenure began at Cybernetica in 1997, and he currently holds the position of Chair of Information Security at Tallinn University of Technology, where he returned to the faculty in 2001.
Invention of Keyless Signature Infrastructure
In 2006, Buldas co-founded Guardtime to commercialize his invention of Keyless Signature Infrastructure (KSI). The system utilizes hash-function-based cryptography to eliminate the complexities associated with key management while providing immunity to quantum cryptographic attacks. His research, which began with timestamping studies in 1998, encompasses over 30 academic papers focused on server-based signatures and the mathematical architecture of KSI. As an educator, he has supervised 15 MSc dissertations and 4 PhD theses.
