Aida Garifullina

First place in the 2013 Operalia competition propelled Aida Garifullina into the international spotlight, establishing her as a prominent lyric soprano. Born in 1987 in Kazan, Russia, she navigated a career path that transitioned from early musical training under her mother’s guidance to becoming a regular fixture at the Vienna State Opera and the Mariinsky Theatre.

Early Education and Career

Garifullina moved to Nuremberg at age 18 to pursue formal music studies. In 2007, she enrolled at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, where she studied under American soprano Claudia Visca. Her initial professional success included winning the Muslim Magomayev competition in 2010. She graduated in 2011 and subsequently performed at the closing ceremony of the XXVI Summer Universiade in Shenzhen.

International Recognition

Her professional trajectory advanced through high-profile appearances, including the opening of the Russian House at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. After meeting artistic director Valery Gergiev, she debuted at the Mariinsky Theatre in 2013 as Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro. Later that year, she performed at the opening ceremony of the Summer Universiade in Kazan, serving as an ambassador for the event.

Recordings and Screen Appearances

In 2015, Garifullina signed an exclusive recording contract with Decca Records. Her self-titled studio album, released in 2017, features 15 arias accompanied by the ORF Radio-Symphony Orchestra. Her work also extends to film; she portrayed soprano Lily Pons in the 2016 production Florence Foster Jenkins, performing The Bell Song from the opera Lakmé.

Global Performances and Honors

Garifullina performed at the 2018 FIFA World Cup opening gala in Moscow, sharing the stage with Anna Netrebko and Plácido Domingo. The following day, she sang a duet with Robbie Williams at the Luzhniki Stadium. Her accolades include the title of Merited Artist of Russia, awarded in 2020, and the Best Female Vocalist in Classical Music at the 2015 Russian National Music Awards.
