Early Education and Activism
Born in 1951 in Old Cairo, Aboul Fotouh pursued a diverse academic path. He graduated with honors from the Kasr Al Aini School of Medicine at Cairo University in 1975. During these formative years, he held significant leadership roles, serving as president of the College of Medicine student union in 1973 before leading the Cairo University student union two years later. He further expanded his education by obtaining a bachelor’s degree in law from Cairo University and a master’s in hospital management from Helwan University’s Faculty of Commerce.

Aboul Fotouh became a prominent figure in the Muslim Brotherhood, joining the organization in the 1970s. He played a key role in coordinating various Islamic student movements into the Brotherhood’s structure. From 1987 to 2009, he served as a member of the group’s Guidance Bureau. However, his political path diverged from the organization in 2011 when he chose to launch an independent bid for the Egyptian presidency, leading to his formal resignation from the Brotherhood.
Presidential Campaign and Recent Detention
Following the Egyptian Revolution, Aboul Fotouh ran for president in 2012. Although he secured an endorsement from the Salafi Al-Nour Party, he did not win the election and subsequently established the Strong Egypt Party. His political activities have repeatedly led to legal conflict. After a 2018 interview with Al Jazeera in which he criticized President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, he was arrested upon returning from London. By March 2022, he faced a 15-year prison sentence.
Medical and Institutional Involvement
Throughout his career, Aboul Fotouh maintained his professional involvement in the medical field. He serves as the secretary-general of the Arab Medical Union, an organization he contributed to long before his periods of imprisonment. He has also been a long-standing member of the Egyptian Medical Syndicate, blending his clinical training with his advocacy work across Egyptian professional societies.
