Early Career and Domestic Transition
Starting his professional path with Ismaily, he extended his contract with the club in May 2007. Despite initial expectations of a move to Zamalek, he signed with Al Ahly in 2011 following prolonged negotiations. His most productive league campaign occurred during the 2017–18 season, where he recorded 10 goals and 11 assists in 21 appearances. Between November 2017 and February 2018, he maintained a streak of goal contributions in 16 out of 17 consecutive matches, bolstering the team's path to their third consecutive league championship.
International Participation
He debuted for Egypt in 2008 under coach Hassan Shehata. A significant period of his international career occurred under Héctor Cúper, during which he helped secure qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, ending a 28-year absence from the competition. He featured in all three group-stage matches in Russia and provided an assist for Mohamed Salah in the encounter with Saudi Arabia. He also reached the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations final, retiring from international duty in 2021 after a match against Sudan.

In April 2018, he moved to the Finnish club KuPS on a two-month loan before joining Al-Ahli Saudi.
