Military Origins and Training
Born in 1960, al-Burhan entered the Sudanese Military College following his early education in Shendi. His formative service included positions within the Border Guard Forces and regional command in Darfur. He participated in active fighting during the Second Sudanese Civil War in South Sudan and the subsequent Darfur conflict. Advanced training courses in Egypt and Jordan preceded his ascent through the military hierarchy, including roles as Chief of Staff of the Army and Inspector General before achieving the rank of lieutenant general in February 2019.

In April 2019, following the ousting of Omar al-Bashir, al-Burhan assumed leadership of the Transitional Military Council after initial public dissatisfaction with his predecessor, Ahmed Awad Ibn Auf. This tenure was marked by complex negotiations with civilian opposition groups and international visits to Egypt and the United Arab Emirates. Although he pledged a transition toward a civilian government, his leadership faced immediate scrutiny following the June 2019 Khartoum massacre, where state forces and the Rapid Support Forces were implicated in violence against demonstrators.
Consolidation and Civil Conflict
Al-Burhan oversaw the formation of the Transitional Sovereignty Council in August 2019. Despite the Juba Agreement, which extended his initial mandate, he orchestrated a coup d'état in October 2021 that dissolved the civilian government of Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok. While he later reinstated Hamdok under a political agreement, he reconstituted the council with himself as chairman and integrated Islamists into influential positions within the Sudanese Armed Forces. Currently, he leads the military in a civil war against the Rapid Support Forces and survived an assassination attempt in July 2024.
