Thiel started playing chess at 6. By 12, according to Fortune, he was ranked seventh in the United States in the under-13 category. He kept playing tournament chess into his thirties and, as of 2014, still played five-minute blitz games online. FIDE, the world chess federation, lists his standard rating at 2199, now inactive, just below the 2200 line where master strength conventionally begins. Packer reported that his childhood chess kit carried a sticker with the motto “Born to Win.”
Chess strength is related to intelligence, but more loosely than popular culture assumes. A 2016 meta-analysis in the journal Intelligence, led by Alexander Burgoyne, found an average correlation of 0.24 between chess skill and measured cognitive abilities. The link was stronger in young players, where fluid reasoning correlated at 0.32, and for numerical ability, at 0.35. A nationally ranked 12-year-old with a first-place math result fits that pattern. Math, school and Stanford
The family moved to the United States when Thiel was an infant, spent part of his childhood in southern Africa, and settled in Foster City, California, in 1977. While attending public school in San Mateo, he scored first in a California-wide mathematics test, and he graduated as valedictorian of San Mateo High School in 1985.
At Stanford he majored in philosophy, not mathematics, and graduated in 1989. He co-founded The Stanford Review in 1987 and became captivated by the French thinker René Girard, whose theory of mimetic desire holds that people unconsciously adopt the aspirations of those around them. He earned his JD from Stanford Law School in 1992, clerked for a federal appeals judge, worked briefly as a securities lawyer at Sullivan & Cromwell and then traded derivatives at Credit Suisse.
The investing record as evidence
Thiel's adult record is a series of early, concentrated bets. He founded Thiel Capital Management in 1996. In 1998 he co-founded Confinity with Max Levchin and Luke Nosek; it merged with Elon Musk's X.com, became PayPal, and was sold to eBay in 2002 for $1.5 billion, with Thiel as chief executive.
- 2003: co-founded Palantir Technologies, the data-analytics company he chairs.
- August 2004: became Facebook's first outside investor, paying $500,000 for 10.2 percent of the company. Fortune later reported the stake returned more than $1 billion in cash.

The PayPal alumni make a natural comparison group, and the data are uneven. Elon Musk's biographer reports SAT scores of 670 verbal and 730 math. Thiel's documented results are a chess ranking and a statewide math placing. Neither man has published an IQ, so any ranking between them would be invented.
Comparisons with chess professionals are clearer and humbling. World champions such as Garry Kasparov and Magnus Carlsen reached ratings above 2800. Thiel's 2199 is expert-level strength, far above the typical club player and far below the elite. That gap is a reminder that talent in one domain does not transfer automatically to another.
What an IQ number would not explain
Thiel's best-known investments turned on judgment rather than speed. Buying a tenth of a college website run by a 20-year-old in 2004 required a view about the future that few shared. Girard's account of imitation and rivalry, which captivated him as a student, explains why crowds converge; Thiel's best-known bets went the other way. An IQ test measures how well someone solves problems that have answers. Venture investing rewards being right about questions that do not yet have them.
