Elon Musk's IQ: What Is Actually Known

The record: no IQ test, one reported SAT

Elon Musk has never released an IQ score, and no reputable outlet has reported one. No psychologist's report, Mensa membership or test result appears in the major biographies of the SpaceX and Tesla chief. The public record holds one standardized result, and it is not an IQ test.

That result comes from Walter Isaacson's 2023 biography, Elon Musk. In an excerpt published by The Globe and Mail, Isaacson writes that on his second round of the SAT, Musk scored 670 out of 800 on the verbal exam and 730 on math. He sat the test before the College Board recentered its scale in 1995, when a combined 1400 was harder to reach than it is today.

The SAT is not an IQ test, but the two overlap. In a 2004 study in Psychological Science, Meredith Frey and Douglas Detterman found that SAT scores correlated at .82 with a general-intelligence factor drawn from a military aptitude battery, across 917 people. A strong group correlation still leaves wide error for any one person. Musk's scores show a teenager testing well above average. They cannot yield a precise IQ.

The 155 claim: a number with no source

The figure most often attached to Musk is 155. It circulates on celebrity-IQ lists, quiz sites and social posts, usually stated as fact. None names a test, a date, an examiner or a document. Follow the links and each site cites another site, or nothing at all.

The claim fails on three counts. First, provenance: an IQ score is the record of a specific test, and this one has no record. Second, logic: the number is reverse-engineered from fame and wealth, which assumes what it sets out to prove. Third, arithmetic: the claimed IQ of 155 would mean roughly 1 in 8,100 people on the standard scale. A figure that precise needs a test behind it. Formulas that turn SAT results into IQ-style numbers do exist, but they were fitted on groups, not individuals, and none was built for a pre-1995 score earned on a retake. Any figure produced that way is an estimate stacked on an estimate. We do not publish one.

The evidence that does exist

The strongest evidence of Musk's abilities is a dated record of technical work. In 1983, at 12, he sold the code for a space game called Blastar to the magazine PC and Office Technology for about $500. He left South Africa for Canada in 1989, enrolled at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, in the fall of 1990, and transferred to the University of Pennsylvania in 1992. Penn awarded him two degrees in 1997: a BA in physics and a BS in economics from the Wharton School. Stanford accepted him into a graduate program in materials science in 1995. He did not enroll.

• 1995: co-founded Zip2, an online city-guide software company. Compaq bought it for $307 million in cash in February 1999.
• 1999 to 2002: co-founded X.com, which merged with Confinity in 2000 and became PayPal. eBay bought PayPal in 2002 for $1.5 billion.
• 2002: founded SpaceX. After failures in 2006, 2007 and August 2008, Falcon 1 reached orbit on September 28, 2008, the first privately developed liquid-fueled rocket to do so.
• 2004 to 2008: invested in Tesla in February 2004 and became its chief executive in 2008.
• 2015: on December 21, a Falcon 9 first stage returned from an orbital launch and landed upright, a first for an orbital rocket.

What the scientific academies decided

Honors are not IQ scores, but they are judgments by specialists who examined the work. The Royal Society, Britain's national academy of sciences, elected Musk a Fellow in 2018. The U.S. National Academy of Engineering elected him in 2022, citing “breakthroughs in the design, engineering, manufacturing, and operation of reusable launch vehicles and sustainable transportation and energy systems.” In 2010 the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale gave him its Gold Space Medal for designing the first privately developed rocket to reach orbit.

Those bodies assessed engineering outcomes. They did not measure reasoning speed, working memory or vocabulary, which is what an intelligence test samples. Public opinion about Musk is sharply divided. The academy elections are among the few assessments of his record made by technical peers under formal review.

Musk beside Gates, Thiel and Tesla

Comparisons between living entrepreneurs usually collapse because the data do not match. Bill Gates offers the cleanest contrast: profiles of Gates report a 1590 SAT, and Gates wrote in his 2025 memoir that he and his Harvard Math 55 classmates all had 800s on the math section. Musk's reported 730 in math is strong. But the scores come from different decades, sittings and scales, and neither is an IQ test. Our Gates vs. Musk comparison sets the careers side by side.

Peter Thiel, whose Confinity merged with Musk's X.com to form PayPal, left a different trail: a first-place result on a California-wide math test and a national chess ranking by age 12. Historical inventors are harder still. Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison never sat a modern IQ test, so any ranking against them compares guesses with guesses. What an IQ number would miss

An IQ test samples reasoning in a quiet room over an hour or two. SpaceX's early years turned on things no test samples: whether to keep going after three consecutive Falcon 1 failures, how to organize engineers around rapid test-and-fix cycles, and how much risk to accept on each flight. Those decisions can be praised or criticized. They are not measured by matrices and vocabulary items.

The reverse also holds. A high score, had one existed, would not explain the Falcon 9 booster landing, which took a large engineering team years of test flights. Credit for work at that scale is shared. A single person's IQ, even if known, would describe one input among many.

How we assessed this

We accepted only scores that Musk disclosed or that a reputable publisher reported, and we attribute each one. Isaacson's SAT figures meet that bar; the 155 figure does not. Dates, degrees and honors were checked against the Royal Society, the Globe and Mail excerpt and the encyclopedia records listed below.
