Short answer: No verified IQ score exists for Vitalik Buterin, and he has never published one. The viral figure of 257 names no test and would be statistically impossible on a modern scale. The documented record is concrete: a gifted class from third grade, a bronze medal at the 2012 International Olympiad in Informatics, and the Ethereum white paper, released in late 2013 when he was 19.

What the record says
Vitalik Buterin has never released an IQ score, and no reputable outlet has reported one. No childhood test result, Mensa membership or psychologist's assessment appears in any profile of the Ethereum co-founder. The number that dominates search results, 257, has no author, no test and no date behind it.
What exists instead is a dense, dated record of competition results, writing and software. It begins in a Canadian elementary school and runs through one of the most widely used computing platforms in the world. That record is the evidence this page examines.
Why 257 cannot be real
Modern IQ tests use a deviation scale: a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15. On that scale, the claimed IQ of 257 sits about 10.5 standard deviations above the mean. The share of people expected to score that high is roughly 1 in 16 trillion trillion, a figure vastly larger than the number of humans who have ever lived. No norming sample could contain even one such person, so no test could be calibrated to report the score.
Real tests stop far lower. The WAIS-IV, the standard adult test, reports full-scale scores only up to 160. Numbers above 200 occasionally appear in older records, but those are ratio scores from childhood, computed as mental age over physical age. IQ 228, the childhood ratio score Guinness listed for Marilyn vos Savant, is the best-known example. Buterin has never reported a childhood ratio score either.
So the 257 claim fails twice: it has no source, and it describes something the scale cannot express. Our explainers on IQ 250 and scores above 200 go further into why.
The early evidence
Buterin was born on January 31, 1994, in Kolomna, southeast of Moscow, and moved to Canada at 6 when his parents emigrated for work. In third grade he was placed in a class for gifted children, where he was drawn to mathematics, programming and economics. He later attended the Abelard School, a private high school in Toronto.
- 2011: at 17 he learned about Bitcoin from his father and began writing about it, first for a site called Bitcoin Weekly at five bitcoin per article, then worth about $3.50.
- 2012: co-founded Bitcoin Magazine with Mihai Alisie and others and became its head writer, putting in 10 to 20 hours a week while at university.
- 2012: won a bronze medal at the International Olympiad in Informatics, the world's top programming competition for secondary-school students.
An Olympiad medal is the nearest thing in his record to a standardized test. National teams are chosen through rounds of timed algorithmic problems, and medals go to the top half of contestants worldwide.
The white paper at 19
Buterin enrolled at the University of Waterloo, took advanced courses and worked as a research assistant for the cryptographer Ian Goldberg. In 2013 he traveled to meet developers abroad, then returned to Toronto and wrote the Ethereum white paper, “A Next-Generation Smart Contract and Decentralized Application Platform.” He was 19. The paper proposed a blockchain that could run general-purpose programs, not only payments.
In 2014 he won a $100,000 Thiel Fellowship, funded by Peter Thiel, and left Waterloo. Ethereum went live on July 30, 2015, deployed with Gavin Wood, Charles Hoskinson, Anthony Di Iorio and Joseph Lubin. Seven years later, on September 15, 2022, the network switched from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake in an upgrade called the Merge, which cut its energy use by more than 99 percent. Buterin had championed that transition for years.
Beyond Ethereum: the published work
Buterin's output extends past software. In 2018 he co-wrote “A Flexible Design for Funding Public Goods” with the economists Zoë Hitzig and E. Glen Weyl. The paper introduced quadratic funding, in which matching money for a project is set by the square of the sum of the square roots of individual contributions, a rule that favors broad support over a few large donors. The mechanism has since been used to fund open-source software.
Formal recognition came early. He won the 2014 World Technology Award in the IT software category, made Fortune's 40 Under 40 list in 2016, received an honorary doctorate from the University of Basel in 2018 and was named to the Time 100 in 2021.
Buterin beside von Neumann and Sutskever
Online rankings often place Buterin next to John von Neumann, the Hungarian-American polymath famed for mental calculation and for the architecture behind modern computers. The comparison is flattering and unanswerable: von Neumann's IQ figures are retrospective estimates, and Buterin has no score at all. The von Neumann vs. Buterin page compares their work instead.
A closer contemporary is Ilya Sutskever, born in Russia eight years earlier, educated in Canada and central to a new field before 30. Both left clear evidence of early acceleration. Neither has published an IQ.
How we assessed this
We looked for any score Buterin disclosed or a reputable outlet reported and found none. The 257 figure is treated as an unsourced claim. Biographical dates were checked against encyclopedia records; the white paper against ethereum.org; the quadratic funding paper against arXiv. The rarity figure uses the standard normal distribution with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15. For reference points on the real scale, see what counts as a high IQ. Our practice IQ test is a screener, not a clinical assessment.
Frequently asked questions
What is Vitalik Buterin's IQ?
No verified IQ score exists. Buterin has never published one, and no reputable outlet has reported a test. The figure of 257 that circulates online has no source and is statistically impossible on modern tests. His documented record includes a gifted program from third grade, a 2012 Olympiad in Informatics bronze medal, and the Ethereum white paper at 19.
Is Vitalik Buterin a genius?
His record is exceptional by any standard. He wrote the Ethereum white paper at 19, launched the network at 21, won the 2014 World Technology Award for IT software and co-authored an influential 2018 paper on funding public goods. Whether that makes him a genius is a judgment. It does not require an inflated IQ figure.
Who has a higher IQ, Vitalik Buterin or John von Neumann?
There is no way to know. Von Neumann died in 1957 without a published IQ score, and his figures are retrospective estimates. Buterin has never published one. Comparisons between them rest on achievements: von Neumann's work spans mathematics, physics and computer architecture, while Buterin's centers on blockchain design and mechanism design.
Is an IQ of 257 possible?
Not on any modern test. On the deviation scale, with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15, the claimed 257 is about 10.5 standard deviations above average. That rarity exceeds the total number of people who have ever lived, so no test can be normed to measure it. The WAIS-IV tops out at 160.
How old was Vitalik Buterin when he wrote the Ethereum white paper?
He was 19. Born on January 31, 1994, Buterin wrote the white paper in late 2013 after traveling to meet developers abroad. It proposed a blockchain that could run general-purpose programs. Ethereum launched on July 30, 2015, when he was 21.
