🇺🇸 Anna-Lynn Clark

She struck out 41 batters in one Little League Softball World Series and pitched back-to-back shutouts to win it

Little League Softball World Series, Greenville, North Carolina, 9 August 2026 • champion with Johnston County Little League, Clayton, North Carolina • 2–0 shutout of Kentucky in the final • most strikeouts in the tournament

Little League pitch counts exist to protect young arms, and they shape how a World Series is won: no pitcher can carry a team through a bracket without running into a mandatory rest day. Johnston County Little League from Clayton, North Carolina, won the 2026 Little League Softball World Series anyway, and the reason was Anna-Lynn Clark. Less than twenty-four hours after throwing a 109-pitch, eleven-strikeout shutout against Florida, she went the distance again in the final on 9 August, allowing three hits and striking out six in 93 pitches as North Carolina beat Kentucky 2–0.

The Little League Softball World Series brings together regional champions from across the United States and abroad for a double-elimination tournament in Greenville, North Carolina. Every team arrives having already won a district, a state and a regional; by the final weekend the pitching that survives is the pitching that has been efficient, because pitch-count limits and rest requirements mean an inefficient ace simply runs out of eligibility before the bracket ends.

Clark's tournament ended with 41 strikeouts, the most of any pitcher in the field. That total is a product of both dominance and durability — she was on the mound often enough to accumulate it, and effective enough that the innings ended in strikeouts rather than balls in play. In a tournament where games are six innings, 41 strikeouts represents the equivalent of striking out nearly every batter across two full games' worth of outs.

The two performances on consecutive days are the part that stands out. An eleven-strikeout shutout of Florida on the Saturday, then a three-hit, six-strikeout shutout of Kentucky in the championship game on the Sunday: back-to-back complete games without conceding a run, on 202 combined pitches. Softball pitching is underhand and windmill-driven, which is less stressful on the elbow than overhand throwing but far from free, and a second consecutive full game is a genuine test of mechanics holding up when the legs are tired.

The final itself was decided early. Johnston County scored twice, and Clark allowed just one hit for the remainder of the game. A 2–0 scoreline in a World Series championship game means there was no margin at any point — one swing changes it — which is the context in which the three hits allowed should be read.

The title was North Carolina's fourth in the tournament's history and, unusually, was won on home soil, since the Little League Softball World Series is permanently hosted in Greenville. Clayton is roughly an hour's drive west. The result was carried by MLB.com, ESPN, Just Women's Sports and regional outlets across the state.

These are eleven- and twelve-year-old athletes, and the appropriate way to describe what happened is narrowly and factually: a pitcher threw two consecutive shutouts to win a national championship and led the tournament in strikeouts. Little League careers do not predict much, deliberately — the organisation's own rules exist to keep it that way — and the record here is a record of one week in August, which is exactly what it should be.

Little League pitch-count rules are designed to make exactly this impossible: back-to-back complete-game shutouts on the last two days of a World Series. Anna-Lynn Clark threw them, led the whole tournament in strikeouts, and won a national championship 2–0 in a game where a single swing would have changed the result.
