By the time Victoria Ou entered high school, science had confirmed something unsettling: microplastics are everywhere. In Antarctic snow, in table salt, in bottled water, in human placentas. What science had not produced was a practical way to remove them from the water supply. Ou, a student in The Woodlands, Texas, decided that was a problem worth her adolescence.

Working with classmate Justin Huang, Ou pursued an idea of elegant simplicity: if you cannot practically sieve particles this small out of water, push them instead. The tool for pushing was ultrasound.

Their device sends high-frequency sound waves across a stream of flowing water. The acoustic radiation force nudges suspended microplastic particles sideways, herding them to one side of the channel, where they are trapped as concentrated waste while clean water flows past. The design has no mesh to clog and no cartridge to replace — the failure points of every conventional filter.

In laboratory trials, the prototype removed between 84 and 94 percent of suspended microplastics in a single pass. For a tabletop device built by two high-schoolers, it was a startling number — the kind that turns a school project into a technology.

In May 2024, Ou and Huang carried the project — 'Harnessing Ultrasound for Microplastic Filtration' — to the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles, competing among roughly 2,000 finalists drawn from science fairs across dozens of countries.

They won the fair outright: the Gordon E. Moore Award for Positive Outcomes for Future Generations, the $50,000 top prize named for Intel's co-founder, plus a $5,000 first award in Earth and Environmental Sciences.

The award's full name is its judging criterion — positive outcomes for future generations — and it frames why the project resonated beyond the exhibition hall. Microplastic contamination is a problem Ou's generation did not create but will spend a lifetime managing. Her response was not commentary; it was a machine.

The win drew coverage from Houston television to national environmental media. Grist profiled the pair as 'a different kind of youth activist' — teenagers who chose the laboratory over the megaphone. The story traveled precisely because it inverted the familiar script of youth and climate anxiety: here were two seventeen-year-olds offering, instead of alarm, a working prototype.

Ou and Huang have said they are now working to scale and fine-tune the system, with the long-term vision of acoustic arrays integrated into water-treatment infrastructure — intercepting microplastics at the plant, before they reach rivers, oceans or kitchen taps.

The engineering challenge ahead is real: what works in a laboratory channel must survive the volumes, costs and maintenance realities of municipal water systems. But the core insight — that sound can do what sieves cannot — is the kind of contribution that outlasts any single prototype.

Ou's ISEF triumph places her among a striking cohort of young women who have taken top honors at the world's biggest pre-college science fair in consecutive years, from exoplanet hunter Kaitlyn Wang in 2023 to bioelectronics researcher Grace Sun in 2024 — a generation of girls claiming the top of world youth science as a matter of routine.

Every account of the project returns to the partnership at its center: two students who divided a hard problem between them and solved it together. In an era when science is overwhelmingly collaborative, the pair's shared $50,000 prize is an early lesson in how modern discovery actually works.

The scale of ISEF frames what winning it means. Nearly two thousand finalists arrive having already won their regional and national fairs; the judging pool is drawn from working scientists and engineers; the prize structure tops nine million dollars. The Gordon E. Moore Award sits alone at the apex. In the year Ou won it, every other project in the building — from cancer diagnostics to spacecraft design — finished behind hers.

The technique she and Huang adapted, acoustophoresis, is serious laboratory science: acoustic radiation forces are used professionally to sort biological cells in microfluidic devices. Recognizing that the same physics could herd pollution out of flowing water — and then proving it at 84 to 94 percent efficiency on a student budget — required the two skills real invention always pairs: knowing the literature, and refusing to accept its boundaries.

Ou has spoken with the press about the pair's hope of seeing the technology reach real water systems, and the coverage that followed the win — television, wire services, environmental media — turned the project into a small emblem of practical youth science: less a warning about the future than a working piece of it.
