🇰🇷 Jisoo

The Quiet Centre of BLACKPINK — Dior's First Korean Global Ambassador

Born January 3, 1995, in Gunpo • BLACKPINK vocalist & visual • Dior and Cartier global ambassador • Founder of Blissoo

In March 2023, on the front row of the Dior Fall ready-to-wear show in Paris, Kim Ji-soo sat in a tailored black look and absorbed an arrival ovation more sustained than the one given to Maria Grazia Chiuri. The French magazines, on Monday morning, ran headlines puzzling over the phenomenon: who is this Korean woman, why is the room behaving this way, how did this happen? The answer, the French press eventually concluded, was that Jisoo of BLACKPINK had quietly become the most powerful Asian face in luxury fashion. Six months earlier, her solo single "FLOWER" had become the best-selling solo album by a Korean female artist in history. She is the oldest member of BLACKPINK. She is also the one the room is watching.

Kim Ji-soo was born on January 3, 1995, in Gunpo, Gyeonggi Province, the youngest of three children in a middle-class Korean family. Her father worked in real estate; her brother is a Korean Air pilot. Jisoo's path into the music industry was unusual in that she spent five years as a YG Entertainment trainee — entering the company in 2011, at sixteen — before her debut. Her early trainee period was, by YG accounts, marked by a slow build of vocal capacity rather than the rapid-promotion track that some of her labelmates took.

She debuted with BLACKPINK on August 8, 2016. Within the group's vocal-line structure, Jisoo was positioned as the lead vocalist and visual — the K-pop industry term for the member designated for high-profile camera coverage in promotional material. Her vocal tone — lower, warmer than most fourth-generation female-idol voices — became one of BLACKPINK's identifying audio signatures, particularly on slower bridges like "Stay" and "Hope Not."

Outside the group, Jisoo's first sustained mainstream-Korean profile came through acting. She appeared in the JTBC drama "Snowdrop" in 2021 and 2022, opposite Jung Hae-in, playing a 1980s university student. The production drew controversy in Korea over its handling of the period's pro-democracy student movement; Jisoo's individual performance, however, was widely praised, and the role established her as a working actress alongside her music career.

Her solo debut single album, "ME," released by YG in March 2023, sold more than 1.3 million copies in its first week — the largest first-week sales for a solo female-artist release in Korean music history at the time. The lead single "FLOWER" topped charts across Asia and entered the US Billboard Global 200 chart at number one. The accompanying YouTube video crossed 100 million views in its first week of release.

In December 2021, Dior named Jisoo its first Korean Global Ambassador — a designation distinct from the more limited regional or category-specific contracts that most K-pop idols hold with luxury houses. The Dior arrangement made Jisoo the public face of the house alongside actresses like Anya Taylor-Joy and Jennifer Lawrence. Cartier followed with a global jewellery ambassadorship in 2022. The combined contracts placed Jisoo at the top tier of Asian fashion endorsement, a tier previously occupied almost exclusively by veteran Chinese and Japanese actresses.

In 2023, Jisoo founded her own management label, Blissoo, while continuing her group contract with YG Entertainment. The dual-label arrangement — group activities through YG, solo and acting work through Blissoo — followed a pattern set by other BLACKPINK members and represented a structural shift in how Korean idols manage solo brand and acting careers in mid-career.

By 2025, Jisoo had released a second solo project under Blissoo, returned to acting in a film alongside Park Jeong-min, and continued her global Dior and Cartier campaigns. Within BLACKPINK, the group's announced 2025 world tour returned her to the stadium stage alongside Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa for the first sustained run since 2023.

The Jisoo of 2026 is, in the contemporary Korean cultural conversation, a particular kind of figure: the quieter member of the most influential K-pop girl group of the past decade, who has built a parallel career in luxury fashion and Korean television acting without the chart-record-breaking solo singles that drive her labelmates' Anglophone press cycles. The Korean industry term for what she occupies is "visual" — the member whose physical presence defines the group's photographic identity. Inside Korea, Jisoo is the most visible female face of the BLACKPINK brand and one of the most photographed women in the country.

Her bilingual fluency in Mandarin and Japanese — uncommon among Korean idols, who typically pick up only one regional second language — gave her, from the group's earliest Japanese promotional cycle in 2017, a structural advantage in the Asian luxury market that the Dior and Cartier campaigns later monetised. The Japanese editions of her solo singles and the Mandarin-market Cartier campaigns drew sales numbers that exceeded the Anglophone-market equivalents by several multiples. Inside the YG Entertainment offices, the Jisoo regional sales numbers, year after year, became one of the most-cited internal benchmarks for what an Asia-first K-pop solo career could deliver.

“I never wanted to be the loudest in the room. I wanted to be the one people listened to when I did speak.”
— Jisoo, interview with Elle Korea, 2023
“She carries the camera in a way that the Dior atelier hasn't seen since the Asian-market expansion began.”
— Maria Grazia Chiuri, Dior creative director, on Jisoo, 2022

Jisoo's appointment as Dior's first Korean Global Ambassador in 2021 marked the moment a Korean idol was placed at the top tier of European luxury brand promotion alongside Anglophone actresses. The contract changed the structural relationship between K-pop and European fashion, opening the same tier for subsequent Korean ambassadors at Chanel, Saint Laurent, Celine, and Bulgari.

Inside the BLACKPINK quartet, Jisoo is the member whose career trajectory most resembles a classical Korean-actress path — acting credits, drama work, the quieter star presence — alongside the global pop-star portfolio. For young Korean women considering both acting and music as parallel careers, Jisoo's portfolio is the most-photographed contemporary case study of how the dual track can be made to work.
