Two silver medals in two different hurdles events — in races 20 hours apart

2026 World Athletics U20 100m hurdles silver, 12.96 • 2026 World U20 400m hurdles silver, 55.88 PB • Ran a 400m hurdles semifinal and a 100m hurdles final within the same hour

The 100 metres hurdles and the 400 metres hurdles are treated as separate disciplines for a reason: one is a nine-stride sprint over ten low barriers, the other is a full lap of lactate management over ten higher ones spaced 35 metres apart. Athletes rarely contest both at a global championship, and almost never in the same 24 hours. At the World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, South Africa's Tumi Ramokgopa ran a 400 metres hurdles semifinal and then, just over an hour later, the 100 metres hurdles final — taking silver in 12.96. The following afternoon she took a second silver in the 400 metres hurdles, in a personal best of 55.88.

The scheduling was brutal. On 8 August 2026 she qualified for the 400 metres hurdles final by winning her semifinal in 56.80, edging Germany's Rebekka Feirle by five thousandths of a second. Then, with roughly an hour of recovery, she lined up in the 100 metres hurdles final against the American Madeline Cooper, who equalled her own world under-20 leading time of 12.91 to win. Ramokgopa ran 12.96 for silver, 0.05 behind, with Jamaica's Tiana Marshall third in a personal best of 12.97.

The next day she returned for the 400 metres hurdles final and produced 55.88 — a personal best — behind Romania's Alexandra Ștefania Uță, whose 55.33 was a European under-20 record. Greece's Eleni Iakovaki took bronze in a national under-20 record of 55.99. Two silver medals in two events across two days, with a personal best in the second, is the rarest kind of championship line: it is normally the schedule, rather than the opposition, that prevents it.

There is a physiological reason double hurdles programmes are avoided. The short hurdles require maximal neuromuscular output with fresh legs; the long hurdles require an athlete to hold technique while blood lactate climbs past the point at which stride length collapses. Training for one degrades the other, and racing them in the same session means the short-hurdles final is contested on legs that have already run a 400. Ramokgopa's 12.96 was run under exactly those conditions.

South Africa left Eugene with medals across the programme, including Matodzi Ndou's bronze in the men's 400 metres hurdles and a national U20 record in the men's 4x400 metres relay, where the team ran an African under-20 record of 3:02.76 behind the United States. Ramokgopa's two silvers were the country's most conspicuous individual return of the championships.

What the double does not do is name her as the best in the world at either event. She was beaten by 0.05 in the short hurdles and by 0.55 in the long hurdles, both times by athletes who had focused on one event. That is the standing trade-off of a double programme, and it is the reason most athletes eventually choose. The interesting question about Ramokgopa is which discipline she keeps.

The value is in the schedule, not just the medals. Running a 400 metres hurdles semifinal and a 100 metres hurdles final inside the same hour, and medalling in both events across two days with a personal best in the second, is a workload almost no athlete at any age attempts at a global championship.

The counterweight is straightforward: two silvers, no gold, and both defeats came from specialists. A double programme costs something, and in Eugene it cost her 0.05 seconds in one event and half a second in the other.
