One night, live
The semi-finals of Britain's Got Talent are the point at which the show stops being an audition tape and becomes live television. Acts perform once, the phone lines open for a few minutes, and a percentage decides the rest. Hickinbottom sang in the third of those nights in 2010, aged ten, and took 6.2 per cent.
That number placed her below the two acts who went through and ended the series for her. The results table records nothing about the song she chose, the arrangement, or what the judges said, because a results table is not built to.
The series she was part of
Series four ran on ITV from 17 April to 5 June 2010. Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden and Piers Morgan judged, with Louis Walsh standing in at the Birmingham auditions, and Ant and Dec presented.
It produced one of the format's most convincing winners: Spelbound, whose 36.9 per cent in the final was nearly three times the runner-up's share, with Twist and Pulse second on 12.4 per cent and the 13-year-old drummer Kieran Gaffney third on 9.6 per cent. The final was watched by 13.50 million people.
How far a semi-final is
To reach a live semi-final, an act passes an open audition, a televised judges' round and a producers' selection. Thousands apply to each series; a few dozen reach the live shows. A ten-year-old who sings on one of those nights has already cleared almost all of the competition, which is why 6.2 per cent is a stranger number than it looks — it measures her against the survivors, not against the field.
The same table that records her exit records that only two acts advanced from that semi-final. Eight or nine performances on the night produced two survivors, and the rest of the evening's work ended when the lines closed.
What is documented — and what is not
Firm: her age, her category, the semi-final she appeared in, her share of the vote and the fact that she did not reach the final. That is the whole of the documentation in the source used here.
Not documented: her home town, her school, her family, her repertoire, any interview, and anything about her life after 2010. She was a child on live television 16 years ago, and the sources gathered for this page carry nothing about the adult she became. This page therefore describes the performance and stops.
The children the format leaves behind
Every series of these shows sends a handful of children onto the live stage and most of them out again within a week. The exposure is enormous and brief: millions of viewers, one performance, one percentage, no follow-up.
The documentation follows the same curve. What is preserved is the competitive fact, and what is lost is everything a biography would normally be made of. Listing the gaps, rather than papering over them, is the only honest way to write about someone whose public record consists of a single line in a results table.
