Season 15
The season ran on NBC from 26 May to 23 September 2020, hosted by Terry Crews. The panel was Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum, Sofia Vergara and Simon Cowell, though Cowell missed the live shows after an injury. The winner was Brandon Leake, a spoken word poet, the first performer in that discipline to take the title.
Roberta Battaglia, 11 and from Toronto, is listed in the season results table as a singer and a grand finalist, having received a Golden Buzzer from one of the main judges at the audition stage. The research record for this page attributes the buzzer to Sofia Vergara, following Talent Recap's tagging of the story; the results table consulted here records the buzzer but not the judge, and the attribution is set down as unconfirmed.
Reaching a final in a pandemic season
The 2020 season was unlike any before it. Live rounds were staged without a conventional studio audience, judges appeared under distancing restrictions and one of them was absent from the live shows entirely. For a child performer, the usual feedback of a full arena simply was not there.
Battaglia reached the final regardless, advancing through the quarter-finals and semi-finals on public votes cast by an audience watching at home in unusual numbers. Finishing as a grand finalist without placing in the top three is the result the table records.
What the Golden Buzzer does
Each judge, and the host, may press the Golden Buzzer once per season. It sends an act directly into the live rounds, skipping the deliberation that eliminates most auditions. Because the device is scarce, its use is read as a statement about the act rather than a procedural step.
For an eleven-year-old it also compresses the timetable: there is no gradual progression through judges' cuts, and the next performance is a live national broadcast. Battaglia's audition is the moment that defines her public record, and it is the search that still brings most people to her name.
What happened afterwards
Talent Recap returned to her in a piece published on 31 May 2023 asking what the Golden Buzzer recipient was up to, which is itself evidence that interest in her outlasted the season by years. The research record notes that the piece was tagged to Sofia Vergara and that a mainstream source, particularly from Toronto media, is still wanted.
This page does not summarise that follow-up piece's claims beyond noting that it exists, because the research record flags the sourcing as thin. What Battaglia has released, performed or recorded since 2020 is not established by the two sources in this file.
What is documented and what is not
Documented: her age of 11 in 2020, her home city of Toronto, her billing as a singer, her Golden Buzzer at the audition stage, and her status as a grand finalist of America's Got Talent season 15, a season won by Brandon Leake.
Not documented in these sources: her date of birth, her family, her school, the songs she performed, which judge pressed the buzzer, her exact final placing beyond not being in the top three, and what she has done since. No IQ figure appears anywhere in this file, and a singing competition does not measure one.
