One night, live
The semi-finals of Britain's Got Talent are the point at which the show stops being an audition tape and becomes live television. Acts perform once, the phone lines open for a few minutes, and a percentage decides the rest. Hickinbottom sang in the third of those nights in 2010, aged ten, and took 6.2 per cent.

To reach a live semi-final, an act passes an open audition, a televised judges' round and a producers' selection. Thousands apply to each series; a few dozen reach the live shows. A ten-year-old who sings on one of those nights has already cleared almost all of the competition, which is why 6.2 per cent is a stranger number than it looks — it measures her against the survivors, not against the field.
